Our Story

Ashley Villarreal started Wonderland Sweets Bakery in her home kitchen in 2017 after years of working in food service and other people’s bakeries, “I wanted to do it on my own, in my own way. I wanted more integrity.”

What does integrity look like in a bakery? At Wonderland Sweets, it means using only fresh ingredients, never frozen. Integrity means creating an experience for customers, knowing they are celebrating life’s most special occasions with her sweets. “It’s got to matter,” says Ashley, “We care and it shows.”

Ashley says she was “raised in a kitchen,” surrounded by her grandmother’s Southern comfort cooking and her mother’s Hispanic food traditions. “Food is everything. I watched and I learned.” That learning continued at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Chicago, where Ashley trained in the European style of baking and graduated in 2009.

Wonderland Sweets Bakery is located inside Rockford’s Rooted, a vintage home décor and gift shop. It’s a family business now, with Ashley’s daughter and husband helping to create Rockford’s most sophisticated custom cakes, chocolates, and pastries along with a rolling selection of soups, sandwiches, and specialty drinks.
